Claud e and I have been discussing redoing the system of planes and realms for Carme. Until now, we've basically adapted DnD's plane system to our own, which fit to a point but there's some issues that we don't have to have to try jerry rigging. So here's where we'll discuss the topic, get ideas together, and then Brussel Sprout and I will basically root through them, figure out how we want them to be put together, argue about it for 3 topics, finally agree on something, and then write it up (just being realistic here, hahaha)
Anyway, I've been brainstorming a bit, I haven't come up with many names yet (that's the last step), but here's how I see it working best, though not in full detail yet (nowehere close)
Rather than how DnD works with a 'circle' of realms, there will be several disconnected Deity planes, so to speak. Each will have a number of Deity's that won't kill each other inhabiting them and controlling something different. These will all be connected via ties to the mortal realm but at a parallel realm i'll explain later
Ethayarajan's Realm, for instance, will have gods like Vhaeraun, Vathmet, Kordetul, Skiasca, and the like inhabiting it, will control infernal energy, fiendish energy, negative energy, undead,
etc, and will be home to demons, devils, and whatever other unholy creations we have.
Alyara's realm, obviously some take on the heavens, will have tryiu, the seraphims, and the like, will control holy energy, divine energy, and be home to celestials.
Gwydion's Realm, an orderly magically focused land, home to lexion and a couple others, will control Arcane energy, Force Energy (energy-based magic, though not elemental based), magic in general to a point, and be home to Some very odd beings (things like Efreeti's and such, but something we'll come up with) based around magical energy.
Amprinoth's Realm (he'll probably be there himself) will control time(lines), and any magic associated with it. It'll be home to a race of creatures i've been working on in my mind, that basically run like clockwork and carry out Amprinoth's wrath on anyone that uses time magic without being a worshipper of him
Arcanvilla's Realm, home to Nazthelruu, Adara, and probably Elerbould, will be a chaotic, constantly shifting realm with no single form at any given time. It will control Elemental energies (best here because of the randomness and unpredictability of them) and be home to elementals and chaotic sorts of creatures.
They'll all be tied in the middle, or the 'mortal coil'.
The mortal coil will be home to very few gods, perhaps belissa for instance, and not be run by any god per se, more watched over by all of them. It's called the coil because it's made up of a 'coil' of intertwining subrealms.
The Mortal/Material subrealm, where our chars generally come from, controls martial energy, and mundane creatures
The 'Twisted Parallel' which is basically like the shadow realm of the current system (and will still be called that by laymen to not contradict current topics and chars), but controls dark energy, light energy (as in not holy or positive), shadow energy, ethereal energy, and other basic things that intertwine with day to day life. Dark and Light, for instance, for obvious reasons, the leaked taint or blessing from other realms, that give humans their varying nature. Shadow for.....well duh. Ethereal for hosting the souls of the dead for a buffer of time before they are claimed by a god's realm, or risen (or possibly corrupted and becoming permanent residents of the realm).
The 'Connecting Channel', which is the realm described above that intertwines and connects all realms and planes, allowing contact between them. It's coiled most closely with our realm, but spreads to the deity planes as well. It has no other purpose, and has no native inhabitants, though some of the twisted parallel may end up residing there. It's how most portal and teleportation magic is made to work, and where tears between realms originate.
I think that covers the basic overview of my idea. But other than how you view the planes, feel free to list how creatures are connected to gods, lore, history, creation, basically anything.
EDIT: Oh, one other thing I'd like to add that we discussed.
Every god will have a number of firsthand servants, so to speak. A prime example is Vhaeraun having a Greater Demon and 3 Lesser Demons serving him. Greater and lesser demons/devils (and other like servants) will be different, as envisioned by their god. Eth will likely have several Greater Demons and Greater Devils, and a small pantheon of Lessers of each type. Alyara Will have ArchAngels and Lesser Celestials (Following the lesser demon/devil term). Gwydion Will have Planar Magicians (up for debate, but basically the epitome of a mage, formed by magical energies, with a vaguely humanoid form) and Demi-god Archmages. Etc Etc etc
I think a second bestiary, explaining these monsters and monsters found In carme will be needed. Like, we have one bestiary for playable races, and one for monsters, in other words (though all playable races can be enemies too)
